Asian palm civets, (small, cat-like creatures found in south-east Asia), are kept in awful and horrific conditions- thousands are cramped in small cages, and force-fed a debilitating diet of coffee cherries used to make coffee harvested from civet fecal matter.
Kopi Luwak, (or civet coffee), is prepared using coffee cherries that have been eaten and partially digested by the civet. The civets digest the flesh of the coffee cherries but pass the beans inside, leaving their stomach enzymes to go to work on the beans, which adds to the coffee's prized aroma and flavor, harvested from the civet feces, which can cost $600 per pound in some parts of the world.
A growing numbers of such civet "farms" are emerging across south-east Asia, confining tens of thousands of the animals to live in tiny cages and force-fed a debilitating diet. Civets are taken from the wild, (which poses a conservation threat), then forced to endure inhumane and cruel conditions with a high mortality rate.
Let the goverment of Indonesia know you will not buy this coffee,- and tell them to stop the cruelty of civet farming.
