Stress can bum you out, causing symptoms such as low energy, poor concentration, insomnia, and body pain. The effects of feeling stressed can lead to poor exam performance and a lack of confidence.

A number of universities (see Newcastle, Bristol, Nottingham Trent, Winchester, UCLAN) have started introduce "puppy rooms" where students can spend a timed slot in a room with guide dogs from a charity and are encouraged to donate to the cause.

This can lower stress levels, meaning better exam performance!

Stress is known to be a significant part of the student experience, due to factors such as work load and situational changes. The implications of feeling stressed can include low energy, poor concentration, insomnia, and body pain and discomfort, to name a few. These symptoms can lead to poor exam performance and a higher number of students leaving their courses prematurely.

Studies have shown how spending time with dogs can relieve stress. A dog’s gaze releases Oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle hormone” or the “love hormone, the same hormone that humans feel when looking at their infant. Some universities have started to introduce “puppy days” or “puppy rooms”, giving students an exciting opportunity to de-stress.

For university puppy rooms, guide dogs from a charity are brought in to interact with students in 15 minute slots. Students are also encouraged to donate £2 to the cause. These have taken place in a number of UK universities including Newcastle, Bristol, UCLAN, Nottingham Trent and Winchester. Doing this would have benefits for the dogs, the charity, the students and the university. Students who have taken part have responded positively to the opportunity.

Lower stress levels in students will encourage better performance in exams and reduce the likelihood of students dropping out, increasing Goldsmiths’ rankings and overall credibility as a university which will in turn provide the university with more opportunities.
