A wild burro named Cupid is lucky to be alive after being found wandering with an arrow lodged in her chest. The weapon punctured her lung – one of at least six cruel attacks on burros in southern California since June. Animal services rushed Cupid into surgery, and she is now recovering. But the attacks continue.
These beloved donkeys, who have lived in the Moreno Valley region for more than 75 years, are federally protected, yet someone is deliberately targeting them with hunting arrows.

Burros are more than just icons of the Southwest. They play an important role in their ecosystems and communities. Firefighters even refer to them as "helpers," because their constant grazing clears dangerous tinder-dry brush that could otherwise fuel wildfires. Gentle and docile, they have become an unofficial mascot of the region, cherished by residents and visitors alike.
Killing or maiming them is not just cruel – it's illegal. Every arrow that strikes a burro causes immense suffering and destabilizes the herds that have roamed freely for generations. Without swift action, more innocent animals will suffer the same fate as Cupid.
