Demand a Stoppage of the Hate Speech Bill, Now!

Nigeria's Senate, which is the Upper House of the National Assembly is considering enacting into law a so-called hate speech bill. The bill which has already passed its second reading prescribes death by hanging to anyone found guilty of hate speech!
It is pertinent to note that this is a country where corruption stinks especially among political leaders who are part of the proponents of the now controversial hate speech bill. Why did they not prescribe the same death sentence by hanging for corruption? Is it because they fear they would be culprits?
When laws bordering on the fundamental human rights of the people, particularly freedom of speech is involved, care must be taken to not wish away the lives of many innocent Nigerians through vicious politicking in the name of fighting against hate speech. Indeed, the parameters for measuring or defining such hate speech have not been widely understood or accepted by the generality of Nigerians.
World leaders, human rights organizations as well as concerned individuals and groups should demand a halt to the obnoxious bill NOW!
