Emanuel wants policy that would decrease Chicago high school graduates!
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has just announced that by 2020, he'd like to require students are enrolled to go one of four places in order to graduate high school: college, community college, armed services or a trade. He obviously thinks this will help kids make plans for after graduation, but that is naive and over-controlling in a useless way. This requirement would actually just cause fewer kids to graduate from high school at all.
Sign this petition to tell Emanuel that this requirement will harm Chicago kids and he shouldn't introduce it.
Unfortunately, Chicago Public Schools are under the Mayor's office, so he does have the power to require this. However, it would probably be illegal to actually enforce the stipulation to graduation. Emanual should stop wasting time, energy and resources on such a foolish idea. As someone who lives in Chicago, I am furious to see our Mayor rolling out an idea like this when public schools here are suffering so much as it is!
There is an underlying motive to this idea as well and that is getting more kids to join the military. Of the four tracks, joining the military would be the simplest and require the least planning and criteria from students. That's why this move would funnel kids who may not actually wish to join the military into doing so.
Tell Rahm Emanual that you do not want to force kids into the military or not let them graduate!
