Some of the UK's rarest flowers and plants are at risk of extinction unless action is taken to look after road verges, according to a report in The Guardian.

Road verges have become refuges to many rare flowers and plants and are now "fundamental" to the health of wildflowers and the wildlife they support.

As the story reports: "Wildflowers are important food sources for animals, birds and insects - they provide nectar and pollen, and are a refuge for many declining bee, butterfly, bird, bat and bug species, with plants such as bird's-foot trefoil - a food source for 160 species of insect - found on many verges."

A simple solution would be the introduction of a local council verge management program that could include banning pesticides, banning mowing during flowering season, and restoring degraded verges to encourage the return of threatened flora.

It's time for action! Demand the UK Government introduces local council verge management programs to protect rare wild flowers and plants from extinction.
