1up.
A name that draws fond memories of gaming news for some, fun contests for others, and the occasional informational article for the casual person. However, the one thing that drew 1up apart was it's amount of user involvement. It could be arguably said that 1up did not consist of big-shot news journalists, but rather the users on the site that provided insight into their own lives, as well as their hobbies and culture.
To me,1up represents the best of the internet. It was a community of people who had passion, who promoted their interests and who truly loved gaming. In it's time, 1up had a woefully small number of dedicated users. These people were not the cookie-cutter, 20 year old, lives-in-parents-basement gamer type, they were all sorts of people, from art students, to park rangers, to your average Joe that lives down the street. It was truly a place that fostered the weird, the creative, and the just plain crazy, and knowing that all of these people were actually communicating with you made the site all the more personal.
