The Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool in Washington, D.C. is a long human-made strip of water that lies between the tall Washington Monument obelisk and the Lincoln Memorial statue, both created to honor previous U.S. presidents. And for whatever reason, Donald Trump has become
completely obsessed with this pool.
Trump has already dumped more than $16 million of taxpayer dollars into his project of 'beautifying' the pool. These days, the reflecting pool is covered in bright, neon-green algae, and curling bits of detached paint are floating to the surface.
Instead of taking any measure of accountability for this expensive disaster,
Trump is starting to arrest people. Literally arrest them and charge them with made-up 'crimes.' So far, five people have been arrested and five more have received official citations. One of the arrestees is a 77-year-old man who had previously won an Olympic medal for the U.S. Why was he arrested? Because he walked by the reflecting pool, and in shock at its condition, reached out to touch one of the floating paint chunks. He didn't commit any crime. But police quickly handcuffed him at the scene anyway, accusing him of supposed 'sabotage' and vandalism.
The absurdity of this is almost beyond comprehension. Trump became fixated on a shallow stretch of water, spent $16 million in taxpayers' money, made the whole pool much worse, and is now arresting people while he continues to throw even more money at his self-created problem. He has to stop.
