Don't Kick 37,000 Poor Senior Citizens Out of Their Nursing Homes

I am not happy with what is going on in my state of Louisiana.

I have worked in long term care for over 16 years. I am currently a social worker in hospice care, and I'm in nursing homes every day. Every day I see how we help people in their time of need and give families a sense of hope.

But if the state has its way, some of my patients could end up on the streets.

That's because a budget shortfall has politicians gunning for ways to save every penny. Their answer? Send more than 35,000 nursing home residents packing.

The evictees, will not only lose their homes but — under the new budget passed by the LA House — they will lose their Medicaid coverage as well.

The penny-pinching budget and the new policy is heartless and is willing to throw a population the size of a small town out on the street. Most of the victims are elderly and some have developmental and intellectual disabilities. Without their beds in LA nursing homes, many of them will have no other place to turn.

The House budget is gross, and I'm angry.

This plan won't solve the state's budget problem but it will bring Louisiana into the national news and not for the right reason. Please join me in asking Louisiana politicians not to go through with the evictions. Sign my petition.
