Help Save Sea Turtles Caught in Shrimp Nets!

Shrimp is America's most popular seafood, but most diners don't know the true cost of their meal. According to conservation group Oceana, thousands of turtles die in shrimp nets every year, and an estimated 500,000 more are injured in the shrimp industry. This includes many threatened and endangered species.

The U.S. Government is not doing enough to save these turtles. Special turtle excluder devices (TEDs) have a 97 percent success rate of releasing turtles from nets, but the government doesn't mandate their use. The government has also failed to set a limit on how many turtles can be killed.

A few simple changes can help threatened and endangered sea turtles recover and thrive. Please sign the petition to urge the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service to limit the number of turtles shrimp trawlers can catch, and to mandate the use of TEDs!

We, the undersigned, are concerned with the excessive numbers of sea turtles caught in shrimp nets every year. According to conservation group Oceana, thousands of turtles die in shrimp nets every year, and an estimated 500,000 more are injured in the shrimp industry. This includes many threatened and endangered species.

Special turtle excluder devices (TEDs) have a 97 percent success rate of releasing turtles from nets, but we understand that the government doesn't mandate their use. We also understand that the government has also failed to set a limit on how many turtles can be killed.

A few simple changes can help threatened and endangered sea turtles recover and thrive. We respectfully urge you to limit the number of turtles shrimp trawlers can catch, and to mandate the use of TEDs. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
