Require Labeling of Food Containing Corn!

My partner suspects he may have a corn allergy. To his dismay, corn is hiding in an unbelieveable amount of products.

The FDA requires clear labeling of a food containing a protein from one of the top 8 food allergens. But the FDA leaves the work on the backs of consumers suffering from less common food allergies, and it can often be impossible to find out what contains corn.

When my partner contacted the beer company Guinness to ask if their products are made with corn, he received this reply:

Thank you for taking time to contact Guinness. Your feedback is important to us.

Unfortunately, ingredients are proprietary information and we generally do not provide this information to consumers.

Corn is hiding in an unbelievable amount of products. Apples can be waxed with a wax that contains corn, and bananas and avocados are often gassed with ethylene from corn to ripen them. Ascorbic acid, or Vitamin C, is typically made from corn. Butters, berries, beef, canned soup, canola oil, carrots, cheese, coffee, flour, garlic, pasta -- the list of foods that may contain corn can make your head spin, and makes life miserable for those suffering from the allergy.

Please sign this petition to call for mandatory labeling of corn.
