The industrial fishing industry is moving in to Antarctic waters searching for tiny shrimp-like krill. Krill are at the bottom of the food chain. Every animal in the Antarctic either eats krill or eats an animal that eats krill. Krill are essential to a healthy living eco-system.
Yet, the fishing industry is hoovering it up to be used in health supplements for humans.
But we have the power to create a safe haven for the krill and the animals that eat it. Our government is part of an Antarctic Ocean Commission which has promised to protect the Antarctic waters.
In October 2018, the Commission will meet again to decide whether to create a sanctuary, making sure the waters are off limits to industrial fishing. We can make this meeting count. Sign now and urge the UK government to defend the Antarctic and its species by supporting an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.
