President Obama: Stop the Pebble Mine and Save Bristol Bay

Global mining companies want to gouge the continent's biggest, open-pit gold and copper mine out of the spectacular wilderness above Alaska's Bristol Bay. A long-awaited study by the Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that the "Pebble Mine" -- and its estimated 10 billion tons of mining waste -- would pose catastrophic risks to Bristol Bay, along with its legendary salmon runs, its abundant wildlife and its Native communities.

The time has come for President Obama to direct his EPA to stop this disastrous mega-mine. But that won't happen unless the White House hears loud and clear from Americans who stand in solidarity with the people of Bristol Bay. The global mining companies have already spent $100 million on this scheme. They are fighting back hard, attacking the EPA and pressuring the White House.

Make your voice heard immediately. Sign the petition to President Obama, calling on him to save this national treasure by directing his EPA to stop the Pebble Mine!
Dear President Obama,

I call on you to protect the environment and the people of Bristol Bay, Alaska, from global mining companies and their reckless plans for the Pebble Mine.

Their colossal gold and copper operation would generate an estimated ten billion tons of waste and devastate the world's greatest wild salmon runs, which are the lynchpin of a spectacular American ecosystem and the generator of 14,000 jobs and $480 million in annual revenue. More than 80 percent of Bristol Bay residents -- including its Native peoples and commercial fishermen -- oppose this monstrous project and have asked your Environmental Protection Agency to stop the mine.

In response, the EPA conducted a comprehensive study, which confirms that the Pebble Mine would pose "catastrophic" risks to this irreplaceable natural treasure.

I urge you to act swiftly and decisively on those findings. Please direct your EPA to use its authority under the Clean Water Act to stop the Pebble Mine.
