Three puppies were put to death at the Salina Animal Shelter in Kansas. State inspectors alleged they were euthanized without sedation by employees who lacked the proper training and certification. Two former shelter managers, Andrea Murphy and Monique Hawley, were charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty in June.
Last week that case was dismissed. It did not collapse because anyone decided the puppies did not matter. A judge disqualified the entire Saline County Attorney's Office after a defense motion, gave the office a week to find another prosecutor, and the office could not do it in time. The charges were dismissed "without prejudice," which means they can be filed again.
I'm Eric, and I run I Love Every Dog. I am not a lawyer and I am not here to say what the verdict should be. That is for a court. I am saying three puppies never got their day in court because of a scheduling deadline, and the door to fix that is still open.
I am asking John Reynolds, the Saline County Attorney, to formally reevaluate this case, find a conflict-free prosecutor, and refile the charges. If his office cannot do that, I am asking that it publicly request that an outside prosecutor take the case.
The deputy county attorney said refiling isn't automatic and has no set timeframe. That is exactly why public attention matters now. Cases like this fade quickly once the headlines move on.
The city has said it does not plan to bring the two managers back to the shelter, and Salina is handing the shelter to a new operator. That is a good step. But it does not answer for what happened to those puppies, and it does not tell other shelters that training and sedation standards are enforced.
Please sign if you believe animals in a shelter's care deserve to have their case heard. Ask Mr. Reynolds to refile, or to bring in an outside prosecutor, and to tell the public what he decides.
