Christie: NJ Must Take Global Warming Seriously

I don't have to tell you: This has been a scorching summer. New Jersey is suffering under record heat and extreme weather conditions.

But if we allow global warming to continue, we might as well get used to it: Because storms, heat waves and droughts are what climate change looks like.

Despite this reality, Gov. Chris Christie has yanked New Jersey out of a regional anti-pollution pact called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

The New Jersey Legislature, having received over 60,000 public comments in support of the program, has now twice passed legislation (S1322) to keep New Jersey in RGGI. Gov. Christie still vetoed the bill.

The program's main opponent is the Tea Party-affiliated group Americans for Prosperity - a group funded by out of state fossil fuel interests. This is a sad day when the governor's politics trumped both his constituent's wishes and the environment.

Will you tell Gov. Christie to take global warming seriously, and reverse course on RGGI?

Governor Christie,

I am disappointed and dismayed that you have vetoed the New Jersey Legislature's legislation (S1322) to keep New Jersey part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

As this summer's extreme heat waves and violent storms have shown, a future without addressing global warming isn't pretty, and I want to make sure our state is doing everything in its power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

[Your comments will be added here.]

You have been elected our governor to serve our interests -- NOT the interests of Americans for Prosperity. I take global warming seriously, and as New Jersey's leader, I implore you to as well.

Thank you.
