Millions of consumers could get up to £70 each as court confirms £200 million Mastercard payout

The UK's biggest-ever consumer claim – accusing Mastercard of overcharging up to 46 million people – has reached a £200 million settlement. If you bought anything from shops or supermarkets that accepted Mastercard between 1992 and 2008, you could be owed £45 to £70 in compensation.

The class action, led by former Financial Ombudsman Walter Merricks, claimed Mastercard charged retailers unlawful fees that were passed on to consumers through higher prices. These hidden costs were said to have affected almost every UK adult – whether you paid by cash, cheque, debit or credit card.

Consumers will soon be able to register online to claim their share, even if they never had a Mastercard. Payouts are expected to be made before the end of 2025.
