Give Chocolate, Not Chicks

At Easter, pet stores, feed stores and hatcheries sell baby chicks and bunnies. Some are even dyed pastel colors.

Purchased on a whim for kids, an untold number end up with broken bones or internal injuries from overzealous toddlers. Others are killed by cats or dogs, or are dumped at shelters. Some are abandoned in the wild.

These little creatures suffer because people don't take the responsibility of a new, little life seriously. Chickens and rabbits can live many years and require special feed, care and shelter from predators. A new pet should not be an impulse buy.

Pledge to give chocolate, not chicks this Easter and to share these important facts with a friend.
I pledge to give chocolate or a stuffed animal to the children in my life for Easter, instead of a live baby animal.
I also will tell one other person about the plight of baby chicks and bunnies that are sold around Easter. Some important facts include:
>> Very often, chicks given to children at Easter die from injuries, or from improper feeding or housing.
>> Some are abandoned to the wild where they die from exposure or are killed by predators.
>> A baby pet is a big responsibility, chickens and rabbits live for many years and need our care.
Alternatives to giving a baby animal include chocolate, a stuffed animal, or a fun trip to the farm or humane society where children can learn about what it takes to be a responsible animal caretaker.
