Stop the Illegal Dog Meat Trade in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the commercial trade in dog meat has proliferated to the point where specialty dog meat restaurants are widespread and it is estimated that close to 500,000 dogs are slaughtered every year for this so called "delicacy."

As you read this, helpless dogs are waiting in makeshift slaughterhouses to have their throats cut. They are treated as nothing more than objects.

Dog meat eating was banned in the Philippines in 1998 with the passage of the Animal Welfare Act, but the law is rarely enforced, the judicial system is corrupt and bribery is common. Even if dog meat traders are convicted, they get off with a slap on the wrist only to return to their cruel trade.

Please sign this petition today encouraging Filipino President Aquino to enforce the law prohibiting the trade in dog meat.
Dear President Aquino,

Up to half a million dogs, many of them stolen pets, are rounded up and butchered every year in the Philippines to provide for the illegal dog meat trade. Conditions in the dog meat industry are truly barbaric. Thousands of dogs die of thirst and distress during transport to the makeshift slaughterhouses and those that survive the journey have their throats cut and the skin burned off their flesh before being butchered and their meat sold to restaurants.

Despite new legislation, this business flourishes because your Government will not enforce the laws brought in to eradicate it.

We, the undersigned, urge you to tackle the dog meat trade as a matter of utmost urgency.
