Urge the Government of Kenya to Take Action to Help Stop the Killing of Lions Due to Human-Wildlife Conflicts

  • van: Georgina B.

Three lions in Kenya's Masai Mara have died due to eating poisoned meat, according to a report on usnews.com. The lions, members of the famous Marsh Pride which were featured in the BBC TV series Big Cat Diary, are alleged to have killed several cows belonging to Maasai herdsmen.

It is suspected the herdsmen deliberately left poisoned meat for the lions in retaliation.

Tragically, the poisoning has not only affected the lions but has moved through the food chain - six vultures have also been found dead near the poisoned meat. Other scavengers such as jackals and hyenas are also at risk.

More must be done to limit human-wildlife conflicts. Will you join me in urging the Kenyan Government to set up a compensation fund to compensate the killing of the Maasi's livestock - as this will help stop reprisal killings.

Furthermore, will you join me in urging the Kenyan Government to develop tougher sentencing laws to act as a deterrent against illegal cattle grazing in wildlife conservation areas?
