Canada's Arctic is one of the last places of wilderness left in the world. But it's rapidly changing. Climate change is not only impacting the environment, it's also opening the Arctic up to increased shipping and development.

These changes are already affecting wildlife that live in the Arctic, including one of its most iconic species, the polar bear.

Thankfully, groups like the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) are working with local communities, individuals, other organizations and governments to accelerate conservation in Canada's North.

In 2016, NCC helped to protect habitat in Tallurutiup Imanga/Lancaster Sound, Nunavut, after decades of efforts by local communities and conservation groups. NCC accepted more than 8,625 square kilometres of offshore exploratory permits from Shell Canada and relinquished them to the Government of Canada, clearing the way for a larger national marine conservation area. In 2019 Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area was established – now Canada's largest.

Globally, scientists are concerned that species in Canada's Arctic, like polar bears, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to extinction due to habitat loss. By working with partners and local communities, we can develop strategies and identify important areas that will help conserve Canada's species.
