Tell the Department of Defense: Stop Killing Animals

Every single year the U.S. military kills more than 8,500 live animals in combat trauma training courses. It’s horrible.

These innocent animals suffer from their birth until their death.  First, they’re caged and confined, waiting to be shipped off to a training site. When they arrive, the cruelty gets intense.  Goats and pigs may have their legs chopped off, throats cut open, or may even be stabbed, shot, and burned to mimic battlefield wounds. Then, they’ll be killed.

Senselessly killing animals to teach our military medics is not only wrong — it is ineffective! Simulators provide a much more relevant training experience for our troops, and would save thousands of animal lives each year.

You can help stop this abuse. Sign the petition — urge the Department of Defense to switch to nonanimal training methods once and for all!.

Dear Secretary of State, Ashton B. Carter, Department of Defense


I urge the Department of Defense to replace the use of live animals with human-based medical simulation in combat trauma training courses. Instead of harming pigs and goats, combat trauma training courses should be taught using more realistic, effective, high-fidelity medical simulators. Cutting into an animal does not replicate performing a procedure on a wounded service member due to differences in anatomy. Research supports that simulators are better training tools than live animals. 


Please end the use of animals in combat trauma training courses immediately. These animals don't deserve to die.
