Governor Hickenlooper: Thank You For Ending The Use Of Jails For Those Experiencing A Mental Health Crisis
Colorado is in the midst of a mental health crisis. In the nation, we rank 9th for the number of suicides, 6th for the number of people with drug use disorders, and 26th for alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
There is good news though. On May 19, Governor Hickenlooper signed into law SB17-207: Strengthen Colorado Behavioral Crisis System. This law will stop the criminalization of those experiencing mental health crises by ending the use of jails for 72-hour mental health holds.
Once implemented, SB17-207 will provide an appropriate first line of response to individuals in need of an emergency 72-hour mental health hold by ensuring that responders are equipped with a variety of options for addressing behavioral health crises that meets the needs of the individual.
This landmark piece of legislation is an essential step forward in both decriminalizing mental health and ensuring that those in crisis get the best and most appropriate care.
