I've endured a 6-year battle with my Housing Association over terrible damp and mould. My concerns were ignored and my problems were neglected.
But now a new Bill going through parliament means we have a chance to change the law; to give renters like me the power to take legal action over unfit and unsafe conditions.
"I had no idea where to get help"
My problems started in 2011, when I moved into a 2-bedroom house with my two children. The property was owned by a Housing Association.
After living there for about a year, we saw black liquid seeping over the wallpaper in the lounge. When I took the wallpaper off and looked behind it, there was black mould and damp patches all over.
I continuously asked the Housing Association to fix the problem but nothing was done.
In December 2015, after serious health issues caused by the damp, we moved to a new home. But we suffered the same bad conditions. I ended up in hospital because the damp made my asthma so bad.
Throughout the whole thing, I just had no idea where to get help. It was a nightmare – not just because of the damp and the mould, but because of the way the Housing Association were treating me. They weren't answering calls, or doing anything.
It's too easy for renters' concerns to be ignored or neglected, and that's why I'm supporting this Bill. Renters' voices should be heard.
