Don't Send Disabled Children to Nursing Homes
In Florida, 200 disabled children spent critical years of their development separated from family and other children their age in nursing homes.
This is a direct and disturbing violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Children's health care services are essential for letting families accommodate all living situations without going bankrupt or sacrificing their children's well-being. But Governor Scott has rejected millions of federal dollars that could have funded services allowing children with disabilities to live at home or in group communities.
It is sickening, negligent and prejudiced to keep children locked away from loving families or supportive peer networks because they happened to be disabled or because their families can't afford their medical bills.
We have an obligation to never let this practice recur. Tell Governor Rick Scott to approve children's health care funding to provide adequate support and services for these children.
