Free Tilly: a pledge

I recognize that the severe confinement and environmental deprivation experienced by the whale Tilikum over the past 25 years is unacceptable, and that the recent attack on his trainer Dawn Brancheau is a clear indication that this animal is suffering from frustration and from a severely deprived environment.
 
I recognize that small pools are no substitute for life in the ocean, and believe that theme parks such as SeaWorld in no way increase our understanding of wild whales and other marine mammals; instead, they convince people that animals are toys to use as we please.  These parks are no place for animals, and whales like Tilikum should be free to live their lives out naturally.
 
I therefore pledge never to endorse the use of such animals in entertainment, and refuse to attend parks which use wild animals in captivity. I encourage others to do the same, in the hope that action will be taken to prevent tragedies such as this from happening again - both human tragedies, and animal tragedies.
