Your help is needed NOW to help get Ohio earthworks on the World Heritage List. .

The U.S. Department of the Interior  in the Federal Register  dated Dec. 14, 2010 said that it is considering forwarding nominations from properties on the U.S. Tentative List to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre next year. The department will take public comments received during a 30-day comment period starting Dec. 14, 2010.

That means we have a very short time to make an impact.  All letters must be received by January 12, 2011.  Also on January 12, 2011 this petition will be forwarded with signatures of people supporting the listing of Native Earthworks on the World Heritage list.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to list these Ohio sites alongside other cultural sites such as Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza and Cahokia Mounds.

The list includes Serpent Mound (1MB PDF requires Acrobat Reader) as well as nine Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks (1MB PDF requires Acrobat Reader) : Fort Ancient, Mound City Group, Seip Earthworks, Hopeton Earthworks, Hopewell Mound Group, High Bank Works and the Newark Earthworks (Octagon Earthworks, Great Circle Earthworks, and Wright Earthworks).

We need you to submit your comments to the National Park Service and sign this petition before January 12th.  We have a very short window to get this petition signed so any help notifying people about  this would be appreciated.

Comments are due by January 12, 2011. Direct your comments to Jonathan Putnam at Office of International Affairs, National Park Service, 1201 Eye Street NW, (0050), Washington, DC 20005, by e-mail to jonathan_putnam@nps.gov, by fax at 202-371-1446.
We the undersigned to hereby ask that whatever action is necessary be done to list the Native Earthwork Mounds in Ohio on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre List of culture sites.

We know that this will not only help preserve these mounds for future generations but it will also bring additional visitors to the site helping people have a better understanding of the history of Native Americans and the Ohio area.

Thank you for any help you can give that will help the undersigned reach their goal of seeing the sites listed on the World Heritage List.

Thank You
