Preserve Future Access to S-Turns

As the number one user of America’s coastlines in terms of frequency of visits and hours spent in the water, few user groups appreciate North Carolina’s Outer Banks as much as surfers — particularly the stretch of Pea Island and Rodanthe — which serve as the primary draw for both longtime residents and visitors from surrounding states. In fact, wave riders of all types are among the only year-round users of this natural resource, providing a rare economic benefit to an area almost entirely reliant on summer tourism. Considering surfers’ role as a primary user group, particularly the area north of Mirlo Beach commonly called “S-Curves” or “S-Turns” — and considering that all but one  course of action involves adding bridges that will  limiting or even eliminating the exiting road-side parking and access — we the undersigned request that whatever solution ends up  being adopted, North Carolina Department of Transportation and Dare County use this opportunity to create and secure some sort of consistent, long-term parking and access for surfers and thereby allow Pea Island and Rodanthe’s most committed user group to continue to enjoy this resource and patronize its surrounding businesses.
