Support Increased Protection for Wolverines

The wolverine might be as tough as its larger namesake but the species is still struggling to survive. After being nearly exterminated last century through uncontrolled persecution, these carnivores are also vulnerable to the new threat of climate change because of their snowy habitat.

Today, there are only about 250 to 300 wolverines left in the contiguous states, yet they are still not classified as endangered and have almost no legal protection. In Montana, even now, they are still trapped.

The previous administration denied all attempts from conservationists to get wolverines the protection they need, even though just about the only way they could be more threatened is if they were extinct.

Fortunately, this might be about to change. The US Fish and Wildlife Trust is proposing increased protection for the species, including official inclusion in the Endangered Species Act and an experimental reintroduction program.

Tell the Obama administration to ensure that this move goes ahead.

We the undersigned completely support the proposal to increase the legal protection and ensure the proper conservation of wolverines, an animal which is on the edge of extinction in the United States. We welcome the move to include the species in the Endangered Species Act with a classification of “threatened”, which, with less than 300 individuals left in the country, they so obviously are, and the proposed experimental reintroduction program in Colorado.

Please ensure that these conservation moves go ahead and ensure the current administration does not follow the disappointing example of the last on such issues.
