Gay Marriage in Ohio

My name is Jessica Morgan and I am running a petition to legalize gay marriage in the state of Ohio. For too long we have been shunned upon and pushed aside because of our differences in society. Help me make a stand and sign my petition that will be sent to the Ohio State Senators and pushed into legalization. Our country has made a valiant effort in understanding and legalizing gay rights nation-wide, but I say its time for Ohio to take its turn. In 1924, Chicago's Society for Human Rights became the country's earliest known gay rights organization. Shortly after the nation followed with enormous gay rights movements, the most popular being the Mattachine Society. Formed by Harry Hay in 1951, its considered to be the founder of the gay rights movement. In 1962 Illinois became the first state to decriminalize homosexual acts between consenting adults in private. And by 1973 homosexuality is removed from the official list of mental disorders by the American Psychiatric Association. It wasn't until 1982 when Wisconsin outlawed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Currently there are only 5 states that will legally marry same sex couples. Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. New York is set to begin on July 24, 2011. Same-sex marriages could be legally performed in California between June 16, 2008, and November 4, 2008, when voters passed Preposition 8 prohibiting same-sex marriages. The legalization of same-sex marriage has been driven by court rulings and legislative action, rather than voter referendums. Please help me add Ohio to the very small, but hopefully growing, list of same-sex marriage states.
We the undersigned request that same-sex marriage is not only recognized but legalized in the state of Ohio. Commitment ceremonies are permitted but that is not marriage. We want the same rights as heterosexuals receive. A few states have already taken the step and allow same-sex marriage, let Ohio do the same. I understand the debates with religion, understanding, and in some cases, ethics. But is it not legal to practice your own religion? Why if someone doesn't understand something, do they push it away and fear it, instead of learning about it. And forgive me, but I think ethics would call for some passion and reasoning. Love is love, that's all there is to it. We thank you for reading this letter, and hope you agree with our plea.
