As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread, Republicans have blocked Senate Democrats' bill that would require companies to offer up to 14 days of paid sick leave in times of health emergencies.
The blow to America's workers comes on the heels of giving corporations and the super wealthy at $1.5 trillion tax cut that exploded the deficit. Meanwhile, the United States is one of just three developed nations in the world that has failed to guarantee a single day of paid sick leave to workers. The richest country in the history of the world, the shining city on the hill, among the worst record on the planet for taking care of sick workers.
And paid sick leave is not just a nice thing to do. It's an urgent matter of public health that can stop the spread of diseases — like coronavirus. Paid sick leave allows sick workers to take the proper precautions by removing the obstacle of losing a paycheck to playing things safe. Without paid sick leave, employees take unnecessary risks to keep their income, thereby infecting coworkers and spreading disease.
At a time of global pandemic, this is a matter of life and death. Republicans need to focus on that and stop exclusively protecting the profits of billionaires and corporations.
