Hello. My name is Robert Fine, and I just returned from attending the TEDxOilSpill conference held today (June 28th, 2010) here in Washington, DC. One of the presenters was Dr. Susan Shaw, a marine toxicologist, with the Marine Environmental Research Institute.
Dr. Shaw was recently invited to visit the Gulf of Mexico to assess and investigate the impact that the chemical dispersant, Corexit, is having on the Gulf's marine ecosystem and its potential impact through the food chain. Corexit is being used by BP to breakdown the oil that is spilling into the Gulf. But there is great concern that the use of Corexit is exacerbating the situation and creating a more toxic environment.
In order for Dr. Shaw to perform a through scientific analysis, this requires a full and complete understanding of the chemical composition of the dispersant Corexit. However, the maker of Corexit, The Nalco Company, has only released an incomplete list, citing the other undisclosed compounds as company trade secrets.
In a situation in which the health of both the marine ecosystem and the local human population are at high risk, it seems to me unreasonable for the Nalco Company to be hiding behind company trade secrets in order to avoid releasing the complete chemical makeup of their dispersant product: Corexit.
This petition demands that the federal government require the Nalco Company to fully disclose the complete chemical makeup of their dispersant product, Corexit, so that the scientific community can effectively perform their job in helping to mitigate and minimize the impact that this dispersant may have on both the marine ecosystem and the human population in the Gulf of Mexico.
6/30/10 Clarification Update: On June 11th, 2010, the EPA released only a partial list (http://www.epa.gov/bpspill/dispersants.html#chemicals) of the chemical breakdown of Corexit. This list includes both derivatives and distillates, in which the chemical composition has not been released (citing company trade secrets). It is these compounds that the chemical makeup detail is needed in order for the marine toxicologists to be able to do a complete scientific analysis.
