DEMAND An Animals life = A human life

On 13, March 2015, Nathan Thompson bludgeoned to death nine puppies in Kurri Kurri, NSW. This was a premeditated act of abhorrent Animal Cruelty. Lucky, the lone survivor (pictured).

We the people of NSW would like to see the The Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) charge an offender committing any form of Animal Cruelty as if it were committed against a Human Being.

The current NSW maximum jail term of 5 years and the maximum fine of $22,000 for a natural person under the legislation Crimes Act 1900, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 is not enough.

We have the right as Australians to have our animals live in a safe community.

LETTER TO:

Premier of New South Wales Premier Mike Baird
Agriculture Minister Niall Blair

I request a review and amendment of the NSW Crimes Act 1900, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 that would see offenders committing any form of Animal Cruelty in NSW as if it were committed against a Human Being.

Amendment request:

  1. The ASSAULT CAUSING DEATH to a domestic animal be treated as if it were an OFFENCE AGAINST THE PERSON, as such;

  2. Minimum jail term 5 years, maximum 15 years

  3. Convicted Animal Abusers to be listed on a NATIONAL ANIMAL ABUSE registry

  4. Domestic animals be acknowledged as a living being not PROPERTY.

Nathan Thompson was handed an 18-month custodial sentence with 12 months non-parole today, Monday 4 May in Newcastle Local Court. The community as a whole is still reeling from the pre-mediated callous act that left nine puppies bludgeoned to death and one survivor ‘Lucky’.

Post-mortem examinations showed the pups killed in the second beatings actually suffered greater head trauma than those in the first.

“A person would have to be deaf and blind to firstly not hear the puppies yelping and in distress and secondly to see these puppies are floundering around ... and dying,” Sgt. Palmer said.

RSPCA officers concluded after examining the dead pups that they would have suffered “excruciating pain and fear” prior to their deaths.

Domestic Animals deserve human respect; we as a community deserve our animals to be safe.

We ask that the NSW Crimes Act 1900, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 be reviewed immediately, with a view that would see offenders committing any form of Animal Cruelty in NSW as if it were committed against a Human Being.
