South Africa - Ban Shark Nets to Save Great Whites

South Africa's population of Great White Sharks are on the brink of extinction. Part of the problem is shark nets, used to prevent attacks. These shark nets are placed out in the waters around beaches and entangle sharks in their deadly web, killing them in the process.

However, these nets have no proven efficacy in reducing shark attacks and are gravely endangering the Great White shark population which is estimated to be potentially too low to recover.

The Great White shark is a keystone species, at the top of the food chain, maintaining the healthy balance of the marine ecosystem. The extinction of these necessary animals will have direct consequences throughout the entire oceanic system.

Sign now to prevent the extinction of the Great White shark. By signing today you are standing up for this necessary wild animal.

Minister Ndundane:

As a person concerned with the health of the ocean, I urge you to stop using shark nets on all your beaches. The Great White shark is at the brink of extinction and experts say that these nets are maiming and killing these increasingly rare ocean icons.

Shark nets have no scientific proof of efficacy and do not appear to reduce the number of shark attacks. What they do, however, is greatly reduce the Great White population.

Great White Sharks are a necessary species in the ocean. They must be protected. I strongly urge your to end the use of shark nets as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
