MORMONS FOR HEALTHY UTAH

  • por: LDS Dems

Dear Legislators,

We are a concerned group of Utahns, and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We worry about 50,000+ people caught in Utah's insurance coverage gap. We support Governor Gary Herbert's Healthy Utah plan because we believe in the following statement from LDS Church officials:

" . . . providing adequate health care to individuals and families throughout Utah is a complex and weighty matter. It deserves the best thinking and efforts from both the public and the private sectors . . .  we hope the discussion and decisions taken in this matter will be consistent with the God-given principles regarding care for the poor and the needy that in the end benefit all of His children. We reaffirm the importance for individuals and families to be as self-sufficient as their particular circumstances allow and recognize that the lack of access to health care can impair a person's ability to provide for self and family . . ."

We support Healthy Utah because:

1. "EFFORTS FROM BOTH THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR"

Healthy Utah benefits and utilizes the private sector by giving those in the gap access to health insurance from the private insurance market.  Healthy Utah has received roughly a year of review from the state and federal governments, and has been endorsed by over 70 prominent public and private Utah organizations.

2. "BENEFIT ALL HIS CHILDREN"

Healthy Utah gives the working access to insurance coverage, and respects the taxpayer by bringing back the maximum possible amount of Utah taxpayer dollars. Alternative proposals bring coverage to fewer people , reject large amounts of Utah taxpayer dollars, and give incomplete coverage through programs such as Utah’s Primary Care Network (PCN).

3. " AS SELF-SUFFICIENT AS THEIR PARTICULAR CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW"

A study from the University of Utah shows that roughly two-thirds of those in the coverage gap currently work one or more jobs.  Giving them access to coverage will be a hand up to improve their economic opportunity.

4. "THE LACK OF ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE CAN IMPAIR A PERSON'S ABILITY TO PROVIDE FOR SELF”

One third of those in the coverage gap are parents with children in the home. Access to healthcare coverage gives parents the peace of mind that they are covered, and children are far more likely to gain healthcare coverage when their parents are covered.

We ask you to support Healthy Utah. In the words of Elder Jeffrey Holland, “I may not be my brother’s keeper, but I am my brother’s brother.”We are asked to love our neighbor as ourselves, and at this time, many of our neighbors are in critical need of help that only substantial healthcare coverage can provide. We believe it is our sacred duty to take this opportunity to give all Utahns this access to care.
