All over the country millions of dollars of food are just left to rot in fields and warehouses. Surplus from growers, distributors, and grocery stores. Millions of dollars of food that doesn't sell, or doesn't look right, or miss shipping dates. The waste creates pest problems for the local community's. Good food could be put to any number of uses and distributed to people in need.
Northwest News recently reported 95 million dollars worth of Apples dumped in fields to rot. Spreading fruit files in droves into peoples houses and restaurants. Apples that could have been distributed to families, children, and seniors in desperate need of fresh food.
According to PBS news, "[in] 2013, the last year for which data is available 15.5 percent of America's Seniors- roughly 9.5 million people faced the threat of hunger." Many talk about children and hunger and low income family's and about helping to boost food programs. We need to start at the source. Stopping waste and help reduce the rising cost of fresh fruits and vegetables.
When food becomes inedible spoiled food can be re-purposed in to organic compost or made in to Animal feed.
Please tell Michelle Obama and Congress to make it illegal to dump, intentionally spoil, or contaminate food against scavengers. Help to end food waste in America and help the hungry.
