Tell the Defence Department to Investigate the Impact of Contaminated Groundwater

Residents living near Army bases across Australia could be suffering from ongoing health issues due to toxins used in firefighting foam, according to a story on abc.net.au.

The report states: "The chemicals perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluoro-octanoic acid (PFOA) were used in firefighting foam at the Oakey base, west of Brisbane, from the 1980s until 2003."

One resident living near the base alleges her daughter has been affected via breastfeeding. This was after the child's blood test came back 23 times higher for toxins than the state average.

In addition, residents had been told that food grown in areas around the base was low risk. However, the Defence Department has since revised this advice and warns residents to avoid food produced in the area.
