CORPORATE CORUPTION FOR SOCIAL MOBILITY
Corporate corruption is a topic of debate in the higher circles. Modern infrastructure makes it less likely that obvious issues of employee conduct are amiss. The real issue is that fact that large organizations become thier own world of politics and manuvering. The manner in which a person may illicitly advance his/herself up the ladder is all about presentation, showmanship, and timing.
Having an ear to the ground on activity - is a key componet to bidding on openings within the firm and using this to leverage status and achievement. Like anything - little is posted untilhas already been decided, it is the point of discussion that lead one to gues the next move. Hence the 'water cooler' conversations become fodder for rumors, gossip, and innuendoes of possible power positions.
The scuttlebutt of those who support the power roles - the Administrative Assistant work with each other to protect thier executive and form allliances to advance certain persons, full knowing they will ususually continue in the suport role of the next position. It is the administrative person who picks up the faxes, relays the mail, and earmarks the email for speedy reply. Theya re the communication line, they are the gatekeeper for time and repsonse for the office. It is through these resources that one can determine if documents have arrived....Unfortuneately corporate espionage WITHIN an organization can leave some material "at risk". Unlike the californa transparent Tech firms, some large organizations give opportunity for material to be reviewed or revised by another party secretly seeking to advance themselves. It allows for the timing of the solution presented or the news alerted to impact the actual decision maker.
I know of no solution to this kind of corruption. Since it takes place inside the company and between departments - upper levels are often unaware of its existence. It becomes a game of manipulation by the persons lower in the echelon attempting to advance their status or grade rank.
WORKPLACE MOBBING
Psychologist have discussed this phenomena, and labeled it "workplace mobbing" an action where a group of employees gather to sabatoge a co-worker, or vendor. It is this manner that people who conduct themselves continue to believe they can "get away with it". they do it all the time and upper management is none the wiser. counting on the fact that the senior is very 'busy' under time contraints, and need to focues... the Assistant runs the interferance program and manuevers appear on the side. Since the executives work meets approval the assistants work on the the side is not noticed. Documents fail to arrive, faxes are lost, and reports are submitted with adulteration of date -- all are schemes to remove competition and promote the work of the Executive attempting to advance his/her agenda.
All I can say is that it is a closed system, and this kind of annomoly can occur - a troubling conclusion by collegae who cannot figure out why their ideas did not make it to the Decision Maker. Few people will report the party who performed the intercept and exchange of documents.
LOOKING THE OTHER WAY
Everyone looks the other way, and the organization suffers with lack of integrity, loss of public quality control, and demoralization of the workforce. People all take pride in thier work. They want their achievements recognized. In an arena that lacks 'fair play' - advancement and innovation fail to occur - the organization will begin to decline. When those people are found out...their reputation will not be repaired. What took place was not an accident, miscalculation, or error of judgement - It is a moral wrong.
SOLUTION
Transparecy elminate corruption like sunlight gets rid of mold. Provide a web based message box to report incidents anonymously. These incidents can go to a special department in HR - separate from management or an contracted "outside firm". - An investigation closed can take place or procedures changes to elimnate the "free pass". Valid documentation must be uploaded in the web reporting system to prevent retailatory action by co-workers. It must be 'closed" to prevent this from being a department to 'get rid of someone.' Normal HR sanctions can take place if policy is breeched or company procedure is violated.
