Australia: say no to feeding dairy cows GM grass to boost milk production

To meet growing demand for milk from Australia, particularly from China, researchers from the Dairy Futures Co-operative Research Centre are urging the use of GM rye grass as feed for dairy cows.

However, opponents of the scheme fear that GM grasses could contaminate neighbouring properties. The proposal has sparked concerns from both organic and non-organic farmers across the country, especially after the landmark WA court decision in the case of organic farmer, Steve Marsh.

Furthermore, consumers could be left unaware they are consuming a GM product- as organic producers must follow strict labelling requirements, though the same rules do not apply to products with GM crops in their food chain.

The effects of consuming milk from cows that have been consuming GM grass are unknown. Please sign the petition to tell Australia to say no to feeding dairy cows GM rye grass to boost milk production.
