Please visit the following link and read the article, " http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/saint-john-moves-to-open-sunday-shopping-hours-1.1865881. " Saint John City Council wants to pass the extension of Sunday shopping and it seems as though there are many citizens who have no idea it is taking place. I feel that every Saint John citizen has the right to know about the current affairs of their city. Saint John is in the process of rebuilding itself, morally and economically.
There is no doubt in my mind that this will eventually be passed but at this point in time, I say NO to extending Sunday shopping hours! 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. is enough! As a retail manager, I feel it is important to both the workers and customers that we work on building a strong community! This should involve having a day to spend with family and friends! This will also build a strong foundation for happy hard-working employees, not longer Sunday hours. If this bylaw is permitted, there will be no turning back, and it will also be opening the door for possibly working on stat holidays.
What the city of Saint John really needs, is to go back to basics and help families spend more time together. Strong family values are the foundations for healthier/happier and well balanced employees. That is the foundation needed for any business to be successful, not longer hours.
Have your say by signing this petition and once I have accumulated a significant amount of signatures, I shall send this to City Council for review. Although I cannot promise anything, as citizens of this city, I feel it is up to us to do something. This is how we can do just that.
Dear Mayor Mel Norton & Saint John City Council,
My name is Joshua Thomson, I am 27 years old and I am a resident of Uptown Saint John. I am writing you regarding the inevitable extension of Saint John's Sunday shopping hours. I am sending you 125 signatures from a petition I spearheaded, which rallied signatures from citizens who were not in favour of the extension. I had the opportunity to speak with many different people and I received varying degrees of feedback. I also had an article in the Telegraph Journal last Monday, September 30.
The purpose behind this petition was to allow citizens to speak out for what they believe in. Many including myself, feel that Sunday is that last guaranteed day that families and friends have time to spend with each other. Taking this away is separating families even further, in a city where couples are already separated. In most cases, the father is out west working and the mother is here with the children working a job and paying for daycares. I researched online and I discovered that some of the happiest countries in the world still have restrictions on Sunday shopping, as they see it as a family/community day. Why doesn't Saint John do the same on Sunday and offer free services for its citizens through places like the Aquatic Centre, Saint John City Transit, New Brunswick Museum & etc. Many citizens strongly feel that if Sunday shopping hours are extended then the City Transit schedule should be adjusted to accommodate workers and shoppers.
I strongly encourage you to review these signatures and take into consideration what these citizens had to say. Some very valid points and thought-provoking comments. I am a single working guy and I truly enjoy what I do, so it will not make a world of a difference to me what happens. Though as a proud citizen, I felt it was my duty to speak out for the public. I thank you for taking the time to look at this petition and I hope it helps with your decisions.
Sincerely,
Joshua Thomson
