Demand an End to the Rotten Effects of Subway Litter

The subway is one of the most prominent modes of transportation in New York City, helping thousands of people travel throughout the five boroughs. However, there is litter accumulating in the subways, resulting in many consequences. The amount of garbage found daily in all subway stations averages about 1,200 bags, totaling up to over 30,000 pounds of garbage. In one year, New York City had more than eight million pounds of trash in its subways. Several years ago, litter was not as much of a problem. A study done in 2005 New York City done by New York State, showed that the few pieces of litter found in subways were only plastic bottles and food wrappers. On the other hand, a joint study done by New York State in 2013 showed that not only was there more trash in subways, but also a greater variety, including yogurt containers, rigid plastics, and bottles.
