NY- Stop Plans to Kill Turtles
A New York Assembly Bill, (A.B. 2490), is seeking to legalize turtle trapping. If trapping itself were not cruel enough, the bill includes the use of spears and the clubbing to death of snapping turtles.
The problem with this flawed bill, is that trapping will accidentally catch other turtles besides snapping turtles- and some turtles in New York are protected by the Endangered Species Act, (such as the bog turtle).
At a time when 20%-, nearly a fifth of the planet's reptiles are threatened with extinction, unsustainable harvests of freshwater turtles should be limited- not expanded.
We ask the Governor of New York to VETO Assembly Bill 2490 to legalize turtle trapping. We Ask New York to limit harvests of freshwater turtles; it is cruel, unsustainable and poses heath risk to humans consuming turtle meat.
