Lahore is a large city in Pakistan that appears to deal in the unlawful slaughter of what is known as useful animals; the female animals like calves, goats, buffaloes and goats. The killing of such animals is prohibited under the Punjab Animals’ Slaughtering Control Act – 1963. Since Lahore is the biggest city in the province, there are numerous animal traders that bring their animals for sale to butchers on a daily basis.
With this continual process, it was discovered that many female and small-aged calves and other animals are slaughtered and sold. “Since we were already busy in seizing unwholesome meat of deceased or sick animals, the butchers shocked us after we learnt that they have changed their strategy and started unlawful slaughter of useful animals,” says Dr Rahat Ali, the CDGL’s deputy district officer of livestock.
Dr. Ali says that the prohibition on killing such animals is not so much due to being unhygienic but because of continual breeding and growth of the species. However, recent raids have uncovered several livestock teams that were in violation of the Punjab Animals’ Slaughtering Control Act – 1963. Stricter, fully enforced laws need to be implemented in order to ensure that all people abide by the Act and protect the young and female species of animals from slaughter. Lahore Environment Government Department, Mr. Younas Zahid, Director – We are strongly urging you to create more stringent, stricter laws against the slaughter of female and young animals. Laws need to not only be implemented but harshly enforced in order to get compliance as required by the Punjab Animals’ Slaughtering Control Act – 1963.
