Honor Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas at National Puerto Rican Parade
For decades, Puerto Ricans have looked to the National Puerto Rican Day Parade as a celebration of our culture, resilience, and the individuals and organizations that embody the very best of our people. This year, we call on the Parade leadership to honor the extraordinary legacy of Casa Pueblo and its visionary founders, Tinti Deyá and Alexis Massol.
For over four decades, Casa Pueblo has represented the very spirit of Puerto Rican dignity, resistance, and self-determination.
From the mountains of Adjuntas, Casa Pueblo led one of the most important environmental victories in Puerto Rican history — defeating multinational mining corporations that sought to extract copper, gold, and silver at the expense of Puerto Rico’s land, water, and communities. That struggle resulted in the creation of Bosque del Pueblo, a community-managed forest that stands today as a living monument to grassroots organizing and environmental stewardship.
Casa Pueblo’s leadership did not stop there.
They played a key role in mobilizing against the proposed Gasoducto, a dangerous fossil fuel pipeline that threatened communities and ecosystems across Puerto Rico. They stood in solidarity with the people of Vieques, helping amplify the struggle that ultimately led to the end of military bombing on the island. Time and again, Casa Pueblo has shown that organized communities can defeat powerful interests and protect Puerto Rico’s natural resources.
Their groundbreaking work earned global recognition when Alexis Massol received the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize — often referred to as the “Green Nobel Prize” — honoring Casa Pueblo’s historic victory against destructive mining.
But Casa Pueblo’s legacy is not only about resistance — it is also about building the future.
In recent years, Casa Pueblo has led what they call an Energy Insurrection — a bold, community-driven transition to renewable energy. Through solar installations, community education, and local energy generation, Adjuntas has become a model of resilience and sustainability. While Puerto Rico continues to struggle with fragile infrastructure, blackouts, and costly fossil fuel dependency, Casa Pueblo has demonstrated that another future is not only possible — it is already happening.
Adjuntas stands today as an example of what Puerto Rico can become with investment, innovation, and political will:
• Clean, renewable solar energy
• Community self-determination
• Environmental protection
• Economic resilience
• Energy independence
At a time when Puerto Rico faces ongoing energy insecurity, climate change, and continued threats from fossil fuel expansion, Casa Pueblo’s message is more relevant than ever. Their work offers a hopeful, practical, and inspiring roadmap for the entire archipelago.
The National Puerto Rican Day Parade has always honored those who uplift Puerto Rico and embody our collective aspirations. Few organizations better represent those values than Casa Pueblo.
By honoring Casa Pueblo, Tinti Deyá, and Alexis Massol this year, the Parade would:
• Celebrate decades of grassroots environmental victories
• Elevate renewable energy and climate resilience
• Highlight Puerto Rican innovation and self-determination
• Inspire the diaspora and island communities alike
• Recognize one of Puerto Rico’s most impactful grassroots movements
Casa Pueblo has defended Puerto Rico’s mountains, forests, water, communities, and future. They have shown us that resistance and solutions can go hand in hand — that protest can become progress.
It is time for the National Puerto Rican Day Parade to honor their legacy.
We respectfully call on the National Puerto Rican Day Parade to recognize Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas, Tinti Deyá, and Alexis Massol as honorees this year — and to elevate their message of an Energy Insurrection and a renewable, community-powered Puerto Rico.
Because Puerto Rico’s future is being built in Adjuntas — and the world should know it.
