Shark conservation is crucial to the survival of not only all oceanic species, but also to humans.
Sharks have remained unchanged for millions of years and because of this all other modern sea life evolved in response to their top predator. There is a delicate balance in the ocean's ecosystem. If the Sharks go the entire system with crumble and the ocean will no longer thrive.
We get much of our oxygen from the ocean and our waste, like carbon dioxide, gets absorbed by the ocean and is taken out of circulation. In other words, if the Sharks die then we will die.
The exploitation of sharks has gotten out of control, especially considering that most shark meat has extremely unhealthy levels of mercury in it. The shark finning industry gruesomely murders around 100 million sharks annually. Most of the time the shark's find are sliced off and the rest of the animal is thrown back in the water to die a horrific death. Shark fins hold no nutritional value and only serve as a thickening agent in the infamous shark fin soup.
Shark population numbers are decreasing dramatically all over the world. Only a few states in our country have laws regarding the import of shark fins. It is time for more.
