Tell a Tasmanian Dairy Farm Not to Use Palm Oil Products

The largest dairy farm in Australia is using a palm oil product in its cow feed, according to a report in The Australian.

Palm oil is directly linked to the destruction of orangutan habitats in Indonesia and Malaysia where huge areas of forest has been razed for palm plantations.

The report alleges the company, VDL Farms, uses palm kernel expeller - a meal made from the nut of palm fruit - while promoting its products as the result of the pristine environment of northwest Tasmania.

Company representatives stated the palm oil product they use, "had certification by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil."

However, the article noted, "Groups such as Greenpeace say the certification does not prevent the conversion of Indonesian and Malaysian rainforest and peatlands to palm plantation, and that some certified companies — including the one supplying VDL — continue to be linked to product from deforested areas."

The orangutan is clinging to the edge - it is now recognised as critically endangered. Everything must be done to stop the destruction of its forest habitat, including the use of palm oil.
