Secular Meditation in Public Schools: Light up Young Minds

Scholastic learning requires development of cognitive functioning, attention regulation, and self-control: Meditation increases all three of these. K-12 pupils who learned meditation in school settings showed improvements of all three and had higher scores on scholastic achievement tests. These results were found in research using standardized tests. There is a high positive correlation between cognitive functioning and productivity, compensation, and career success.

As neurologic and psychosocial develoment progresses with age, pupils are able to learn meditation more quickly, maintain regular practice more independently, realize a meditate state, and derive more benefits. Instruction is best started in kindergarten. The number of hours of instruction and group practice is to be progressively higher in higher grade levels. The most important qualification for meditation instructors is history of many years of practice. It is likely that qualified volunteers could provide instruction.
There are many advantages to offering this elective in the hour after school or on Saturdays. Signed parental consent is recommended.
