Choose To Celebrate Peace - Replace Columbus Day With Indigenous Peoples' Day In Schenectady, NY

Help us replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in Schenectady!

New York State is rich in Native American history. We live among the great Haudenosaunee, keepers of the Eastern and Western Gates and the Council Fire, comprised of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora nations. We live among the Natives responsible for writing the Great Law of Peace, which was used in part to guide the American Constitution we know today. We have statues and monuments across the entire state to honor Native Americans and historical museums to preserve the history and culture of these great tribes.

With all the rich Native history in New York, we still only have three cities in the entire state, Akron/Newstead, Village of Lewiston, and Ithaca, that celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, while only ONE of those cities (Ithaca) have replaced Columbus Day completely.

So why continue to celebrate a holiday to honor a murderer when we can honor the memory of those that were murdered? It's time to follow the example of our brothers and sisters of the Haudenosaunee and fight for peace. It's time to remove Columbus Day from our calendars and honor the Native tribes of New York.

Choose to abolish hate and celebrate peace instead. Sign the petition to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in the city of Schenectady, NY.
