My Name is Christy Sigmon, I was in the pledge class of 93. I am currently an elementary school principal at Eubank Academy of Fine Arts. I was given the task of “cleaning up” Eubank 5 years ago. We have been working hard to turn our school into a Fine Arts magnet school. One of my key supporters in this adventure was Janet (Schultz) Kahn another Kappa Alum. She was such an incredible influence in the Arts Community and an even bigger influence in Fine Arts for APS.
There were 3 of us in our district that were diagnosed with cancer at the same time. I am the only one that beat it. Janet’s loss was devastating for myself and many in the district. I wanted to let you know about the work we are currently doing in honor of an amazing woman. We are collecting signatures on a petition that will go to the Board of Education to rename Eubank to Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts.
Janet Kahn was the creator of the elementary arts program in the Albuquerque Public Schools. She built a program that more than tripled in size and gives all elementary students in the district the opportunity to experience quality art and music programs. Janet created the district ARTS center, as well as a number of successful collaborations with a wide variety of community arts organizations that make their resources available to students and teachers. She was a huge advocate for Eubank as it transitioned into a Fine Arts Academy.
Janet Kahn was a leader in the community and in the district. She lived her life with courage and determination. She fought a warrior’s fight against a rare form of cancer. She lost her battle on January 15, 2016. We would like to honor her hard work and dedication to the Albuquerque community by renaming Eubank Elementary to Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts.
