Texas Governor Rick Perry wanted President Barack Obama to apologize for comments made by his Attorney General Eric Holder concerning Texas' voter ID law while in Texas recently. Holder compared the voter ID law -- which would require all voters to present a government issued photo ID -- to poll taxes that were used to disenfranchise minority voters in the past.
However, this law would disenfranchise up to a million eligible voters, including 25% of black voters, the poor, the elderly, and other minorities. I myself am a Texan that would be disenfranchised over this law.
The state says that this was passed to help prevent voter fraud, but even the Texas' attorney general couldn't find any recent examples of it. Voter fraud is extremely rare.
Please tell Rick Perry that he is the one that should apologize!
I am writing to you today because of comments you made concerning Eric Holder's thoughts on Texas' voter ID law.
Eric Holder compared the voter ID law to poll taxes, which were used to disenfranchise minority voters. You wanted President Barack Obama to apologize for these comments while he was in Texas recently. However this law would disenfranchise up to a million eligible voters, including myself, a Texan. You all say that this law is necessary to help combat voter fraud, however voter fraud is extremely rare and even the Texas' attorney general couldn't find any recent examples of it.
YOU are the one that should be apologizing.
