Urge the Australian government to not allow the reintroduction of crocodile trophy hunting

According to a report in the Guardian, trophy hunting for crocodiles is back on the agenda in Australia after an internal dispute in the Federal Coalition government over the decision to ban importing lion trophies from Africa.

Banning the import of lion trophies has started a push by the National Party for the reintroduction of trophy hunting of crocodiles in the Northern Territory.

The Northern Territory government wanted to trial trophy hunting of large saltwater crocodiles, citing the economic benefits. Some 600 crocodiles are shot under permit in the Northern Territory every year, but trophy hunting is banned.

Supporters of the ban on crocodile hunting believe there is far more potential in ecotourism than safari hunting activities that can be afforded by a few.

The Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said he will not do anything that could allow the reintroduction of trophy hunting in Australia.

However, under an environmental agreement struck between the Abbott Government and the Northern Territory, it is understood there may be little the minister can do to stop it.

Crocodiles deserve to be protected. Will you join me in urging the Federal Environment Minister not to bow to pressure to allow the reintroduction of trophy hunting in Australia and press for a permanent ban on the inhumane sport?
